How to overcome like King David!

So many children grew up to love the story of David in the Bible and the times when he overcame his enemies. As I get older I appreciate the trials of David where he took several steps back in the eyes of “success” and yet still carried the anointing and identity of being king. One of the greatest trials was running for his life from King Saul who wanted to kill him. In David’s eyes Saul was God’s anointed leader of Israel and he probably desired for Saul’s mentorship to pour his wisdom and resources to help David to become Israel’s next king. Yet Saul had an evil spirit that tormented him. Evil (orphan) spirits struggle to invest in the next generation because they are too busy building their own kingdom instead of God’s.

Saul would have appeared very successful in building his own kingdom. The nation would have believed God was on His side. He had the largest numbered armies, wealth, and palaces. His plan was to pass that on to his son Jonathan but because He didn’t surrender His plan to God, even Jonathan was a target of Saul’s spear in rage and anger. Saul hated his own son for following God’s plan in protecting and supporting David as future king. Once Jonathan knew to tell David to run away from His father’s murder plans, David quickly ran away to a place called Nob (city of the priests), without carrying any weapons with him. Just so happens that a city full of priests don’t carry weapons either but they did have a trophy of God’s faithfulness that they kept hidden and possibly showed to the younger generation of priests.

That trophy was Goliath’s sword and possibly the greatest sword in the land. The same sword that David used to cut off Goliath’s head years ago was now given to him as he is running from the country and people He was anointed to protect. So think about this, God prepared in advance for David a weapon of God’s greatest faithfulness so that he could carry that memory around as he is running for his life from His own country.

This story of David can encourage you today because you are anointed by King Jesus and have become one with Him to invest in His kingdom. Maybe today your success appears like it has taken a few steps back. What if God is preparing the testimony of His faithfulness with your past enemies to be your weapon of deliverance today? That could like meditating on where God delivered you and you overcame with Him and using that as a weapon against principalities and powers that are robbing the next generation God entrusted you with. Ask for wisdom and listen as God gives you strategy how to grow His kingdom and steward His people that need to know of His faithfulness.

1 Samuel 21:8 Then David said to Ahimelech, “Then have you not here a

spear or a sword at hand?

For I have brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the

king’s business required haste.” And the priest said, “The sword of Goliath

the Philistine, whom you struck down in the Valley of Elah, behold, it is here

wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you will take that, take it, for there is

none but that here.” And David said, “There is none like that; give it to me.”

10 And David rose and fled that day from Saul and went to Achish the king of Gath.
